Updating some older Empire models

Since the very productive first three months netted me a whole pile of painted Empire for Warhammer Fantasy, I thought I would touch up the paint job and rebase my existing Knights and characters so it will all fit together. Not a massive job, but for the sake of completeness, necessary.

First up is the mounted Valten and Ludwig Schwarzhelm. Mainly have used these as an Empire Grandmaster and mounted BSB.

Next up my big unit of Knights Pather. A lot of them had chipped paint and they also required shields as originally I didn't get round to it. Now all ready for the battlefield.

Big knight unit with characters.

That is probably it for Empire for the short term. Time to move onto another project for some variety.

Slow grow Warhammer Armies Project League Post 8 Final Post

Well it has been 3 months and I managed to do it. Painted all my planned Empire for the Army Project challenge. It has been great having a focus to get some models painted. These Empire have sat here for decades so it was nice to get them out and give them some love.

So here is the last post, the army photo of all I painted in these last three months.

All up here is well over 1200 points, not too bad. Really like the colour and the banners. The bases also really tie everything together, from the war wagon to the archers.

And just for kicks, did an army photo like from the old Warhammer Armies book.

Its been great fun doing this project. I expect next will be some games with this Empire force, or maybe even a campaign! We shall see.

Slow grow Warhammer Armies Project League Post 7

Well I finally did it. Finished the last unit for the army challenge. The War Wagon. What an amazing model. From the wagon itself to the crew it is just amazing. I decided to paint it in the classic colours from the old White Dwarf. Painting the crew in those colours was such a pleasure, a riot of colour. I am really pleased with how it turned out.

The base is a custom resin print that a friend did for me, 65mm x 115mm. Perfect to fit everything on it.

Love the classic scheme for these uniforms, such fun to paint.

It still does need the banners, but I have not been able to find a good enough scan of them to use and print, and I don't have the skills to paint it from scratch. Hopefully I will be able to get them at some stage.

Glad to get it done and it is an amazing center piece model. My last post will be an army pic.

Thanks for looking!

Slow grow Warhammer Armies Project League Post 6

Finally have a bit of an update. Work has been hectic so I haven't been as prolific as I would like, especially as I need to have it all done by the end of this month.

I have however, finished my basic 1000pts.

Finally got this unit done. This was a hard unit to paint, despite the rather nice models. Just getting time was the main factor here. Though I was focused and finished them before moving onto the last of the knights.

I didn't have any of the Empire Knights I could use as Reiksguard nor the funds to get any. A friend very graciously printed up some Highlands knights for me to use. The models are quite nice and definitely fit the Empire aesthetic. I also wanted to try something new and have a spiral lance, as I quite enjoyed the look of it. Again, it was my friends suggestion to use some masking tape (2mm to be precise) to get that smooth look. Rather easy process that turned out rather good.

I do need to do an army picture at some stage, though I will likely do that at the end of the month. I also have a couple more units to try and get done as extra credit before the end of the month. We shall see if I can get that done!

Thanks for looking!

Slow grow Warhammer Armies Project League Post 5

Took a little longer to complete this unit but did get there in the end. Lovely models that were a pleasure to paint.

Did add a splash of red every now and again just for kicks. Not sure what the next unit will be, but am tempted to do the old Empire War Wagon. Shall see.

Thanks for looking.

Slow grow Warhammer Armies Project League Post 4

Another unit finished for the slow grow campaign. This unit is actually for my 1500 point list, however, when inspiration strikes to paint some models, its best to ride it. (pun intended)

Here are some old outriders. In contrast to my other units, I painted this unit from the 5th edition images. I really like the colourful uniforms and yellow barding.

Such a joy to paint. They were a lot of fun.

The next unit will be some crossbowmen I think, but this was a fun and colourful distraction.

Slow grow Warhammer Armies Project League Post 3

Finished up some halberdiers for my first 1000 points. For the most part they are the old 4th edition plastic models, which are not super detailed but they look passable all ranked up.

These state troops are from Reikland, however, to make it a little more interesting I did do some red legs every now and again. Hopefully they don't look too Talabheim.

I do intend on expanding this unit for the 1500 points list, but for now they are done. Now onto the next. Hoping to get a fair chunk done before I go back to work as then I know my progress will slow down.

Slow grow Warhammer Armies Project League Post 2

Made some more progress with my fledgling Empire force. I finished the dashing and daring, General Heimerdinger.

I have been fortunate enough to get in two games so far with the Empire, against my friends Dwarfs. In both games, Heimerdinger and his knights performed very well. In his first outing, he managed a long charge against some thunderers and saw them off, then turned onto the flame cannon next to them. By the time he finished with them, he was able to charge the rear of the dwarf lord and his warriors, with the Reiksguard on foot charging the front. A duel between him and the dwarf lord Bronzebeard ended in Heimerdinger besting the lord of the dwarfs.

In his second outing, again with his trusty Knights Panther unit, he flanked the dwarf line, charged the flame cannon and overran into the thunderers unit, running them down. By the time they organised themselves, he was able to charge the dwarf unit with Bronzebeard, in the flank, with another challenge issued by Bronzebeard. Heimerdinger cut him down before he could swing.

So with such heroics, he needed some paint. I have had a Reiksmarshal in metal for a long time, so decided to use him as Heimerdinger, especially as it came with a Runefang, which is what I use.

Quite happy with how he turned out. Now onto the next unit, some old halberdiers.

Thanks for looking.

Slow grow Warhammer Army Project League Post 1

A few friends and I are building and painting a new army using the rules found at the Warhammer Armies Project. The plan is to paint a 1000 point (or 1500 point for the very keen) Warhammer army from January to March and then play some games with them.

I have a stockpile of old Empire that I have been wanting to paint for ages, as most of it is from 4th/5th edition and I leaped at the chance to get involved. My Empire army is going to come from Reikland, and I have made an army list that contains all the models I want to paint for 1500 points.

Here is my first unit for the challenge, a unit of Reiksguard Knights on foot. I have had these guys for a long time, but since they got removed from 6th edition onwards, they haven't had a purpose. Well I had to paint them first as I think they look great. I decided to start with just 20, not that I have a great deal more than that though. I also cheated with the banner and got some Landsknecht banners from Petes flags.

I started with the first rank, including the banner to try and fuel the motivation to get the rest of the unit done.

I also had a stockpile of the Reiksguard Knights shields so this was a good time to use them!
The unit in all its glory.

And finished! Had to wait for some Geek Gaming Scenics instant base stuff to use as I quite liked the sand one I trialed before.

I have also had some games using the Warhammer Armies Project 9th edition, but I will post an update on them next time.

Thanks for looking!

Cheers!

Something a little different

Something a little different today. A friend asked me to paint a base to go along with his Thousands Sons daemon prince. It is a wrecked Space Wolf dreadnought, that has seen better days.

I jumped at the chance to paint it, and also got to try out the Geek Gaming Scenics premade basing (or through Zorpazorp) as that has been on my radar for a long while. I decided to try out the desert one, with a couple of their tufts.

I must say that I was quite pleasantly surprised by the experience and I do look forward to using the product on other models. I would say that the initial PVA needs to be heavy so it can grab the sand better and there were a few sections I had to go over again. That, however, was my inexperience not the product. I do want to try out some of the other ones for Lord of the Rings and other fantasy models.

Quite happy with how it turned out.

Not sure what to work on next as the temperature is getting quite warm and I tend to stay out of the garage.

Thanks for looking.

Cheers.
