Dwarf Longbeards

I've been deciding what to paint for my Dwarfs as I believe I have most things covered, and I thought that its been awhile since I painted a regiment, and thought I might tackle the old metal Longbeards that I've had assembled and primed for about 6 or 7 years.

I must say, that these models are really nice, so much detail on them! I hope they won't be ditched when the new Dwarf models come out however I have an inkling they will be which is a shame. Just as well I got some more recently and perhaps before the release I may increase them to 40. These were a lot of fun to paint, and its really great to see all the gems and that these old Dwarfs have there priorities straight with all the drinking mugs aplenty.

I'm also painting up this unit for the Bugman's unit painting challenge, so that will give me some extra incentive to keep at them. Hope you like the look of them.

Slayers: A New Hope

Another quick update here. Finished off the first three of the Slayers I need to do for the unit painting challenge at Bugman's. I do intend at the end to add some tattoo's, but for now they are done.

I also noticed that they model on the far left is a GW resculpt of an ealier slayer model. It is slightly different to the original and is thinner with a gloved hand. Amazing what you find when you look at slayers all day!

I also have realised I haven't shared my Beard recipe, so I will endeavour to do so below. These are all using the current GW range (bar one), but really the colours are rather general, so I'm sure you could achieve something similar with other paints.

First a Skrag Brown undercoat
Wash with Agrax Earthshade
Couple of light layers of Troll Slayer Orange
Wash of Baal Red (old wash) to tone done the orange
Wash of Agrax Earthshade to add some depth
Couple of light layers of Troll Slayer Orange but keep the recesses dark
Highlight the tips 1:1 Troll Slayer Orange and Yriel Yellow

Painting Motivation...and Slayers

I thought I might take a little time in this post to talk about some of the things that keep me motivated. I can at times paint quite quickly, and at others, need a break, but there are a few things that keep me focused rather than jump from project to project.

Probably my main motivation is online painting competitions. Last year I entered all the compeitions at the Bolter and Chainsword for my Imperial Fists. This was ideal for me as at the time I very rarely had time for games (with a new baby in the house) but could still be connected to the hobby and feel productive (and quiet). I found that this was great to put a deadline on what I needed to do, and helped me stay focused. Most of the Imperial Fists I have posted were painted last year, so I did very well!

Its also worth mentioning that I also only have in sight what I am currently painting. I think I have mentioned this before, but everything else is either boxed or put in a draw out of sight. I can get very easily discouraged if there is too much, so I make sure that for myself, there is nothing out. This also includes putting away my models once I have painted them, for the additional fact that I have two boys running around the house and Warhammer is not very safe around their grimy paws. 

Another form of motivation for me was discovering youtube Warhammer battle reports, in particualar Wargamming for Fun. Linked to my inability to have time for games (baby in the house), this was a great source of inspiration to get things painted. Generally I listened to the friendly banter and good and bad luck as I painted, and before I knew it, I was making great headway through units. Can't recommend it enough. It is also worth mentioning, that Wargamming for fun is running an escalation league on their home website, where Ade and Andy are planning on starting a new army from scratch, and you get to see their progress, just like the old White Dwarf Tale of Four Gamers! Great stuff!

Lastly (and more recently) I encountered podcasts for Warhammer. There is a ton out there, and at present have only really listened to one, but I believe it is of very high quality (and shenanigans), The Dwellers Below. They are a more tournament orientated group, however I do enjoy their insights and reviews on different armies. Again, I listen as I paint and that tends to help me stay focused.

These have worked for me, and certainly help me stay focused on getting my models painted, which is a very welcome change, considering in the past I really didn't.

So, is there any else that motivates you? Other youtube channels or podcasts that you like to listen to? Please let me know as I'm always hungry for more!

To finish off, I have painted 2 Slayers since last time. I know I mentioned painting my Chaos Sorceror, but I hit a hurdle in the paint scheme, and it is currently languishing in the shame draw till inspiration strikes. So you will have to make do with these.

Unfortunately, the Dwarf of the right has had his sword cut off at some stage in his history (not by me!), however I couldn't resist painting him anyway. 

Also I have entered a unit this time for the Bugman's painting comp, unsurprisingly it is the last of my Slayer unit. Here's hoping the dealine will keep me focused in finishing these 11 off.

Another day another Slayer...

Well, finished off this unit champion for my Slayer unit. I entered him into the Bugman's painting comp, so we shall see how he goes. This would be my first time painting gems that aren't red, so hopefully it turned out alright.

Wasn't sure if I should add blood to the axe, any thoughts?

Warhammer Quest Troll Slayer

I really like Slayers for Dwarfs. Love the background, a dishonoured Dwarf, seeking the only honourable outlet left by embarking on a quest to slay as many dangerous and lethal opponents before they die. That and the models I think are pretty good, going all the way from the past to the present. I have mentioned before that I am looking forward to painting my Slayer unit. Despite the fact that the only game I have used them in had them wiped out before they did anything. Guess I just need more practice!

At Bugman's the painting contest is Slayer for this month. I got to pick it as I won last month with my Gob-lobber. I recently procured an old Warhammer Quest Troll Slayer off ebay for a decent price (it was listed as a normal slayer), and since I have been obsessed with the Warhammer Quest game on iPhone, it was a natural choice!

So I named him after my character in that game, Argrul Lost-throne. That name alone speaks volumes of what he might have done or suffered to then take the Slayer pledge. Who know's, but I am looking forward to fielding him as a Dragon Slayer in my next game.

I wanted to try more inticate tattoos this time, and basically copied the ones from the cover of the Gotrek and Felix Omnibus 2. 

I also spent more effort this time on his skin, going for maybe 5 or 6 layers, don't recall. I quite like the result though. Anyways, that's enough for now, back to painting GW Dwarfs!

Dwarf Gob-Lobber

Finally finished off the crew for the old Dwarf Gob-Lobber. I'm fortunate to have one, though I am missing one crewmen, the cook and meal. Hopefully one day I can get a full set, but we shall see.

I did this model for the Bugman's monthly painting challenge here. I came second in the last months contest, so I'm hoping I can do a little better this time. Plus it has the added bonus of me being able to field another Grudge Thrower against my friends Night Goblin army with the added bonus of being able to throw netted goblins at him. That just appeals to me on all kinds of levels.

I have another contest to do, due this Sunday for the International Board of Hobbyists. Unfortunately I have been very sick this past week, so I only have undercoated them. Hoping I can get a bit better before the weekend and try and crank them all out in two (or less nights). We shall see.

In terms of painting more Dwarfs, I think I need more core, namely Great Weapon Warriors, so they may be the next unit. Then I can do something fun, like Slayers. Got something very cool in mind for them.

Of Dwarfs and Orcs

Update here with both my Dwarfs and my Orcs and Goblins. Been a rather productive week for me painting wise, so hopefully that can continue.

Firstly an update with my Dwarfs. I decided to enter the Bugman's Brewery monthly challenge again (after coming 2nd last month). This time the theme is war machines. So I decided to paint my old Goblobber. Such an awesome model, and very characterful, plus it fits wonderfully in my themed games against my friends Night Goblins. Its just win win. Love the old school humour, plus its something different, so it ticks all my boxes. I still have the crew to paint (all 5 of them), but not bad for a weeks work. Let me know what you think.

Also, I painted my shaman for my Orcs and Goblins force. I call him Ol Toof. Hope you like.

The entire Orc and Goblin force I have. Might have to add some regiments I think next. I think it might either be Rugluds armoured Orcs, or 30 Biguns with a plethora of extra armour. We shall see.

Painting competitions

Greetings once more, just finished something from my desk. 

The Bugman's Brewery has a monthly painting competition, which centers around a theme. If you win (by popular vote) you get to pick the theme next time, and the entry for this month is gold gold gold. So I had one of these old Citadel adventurers lying around, stuffing a bag full of gold, so thought I might have a go. I like having deadlines to complete models, as it adds that extra incentive, and plus competitions mean I can try new things I normally wouldn't. So here is my entry, let me know what you think.

 I quite liked how he turned out, especially the eyes. To be honest I usually don't bother with the eyes, but of late all the competition entires I have. Most of the time you don't see them (especially with Dwarfs), but with the close ups they get, I figure its worthwhile.

I also painted another model for another forum, The International Brotherhood of Hobbyists. This was an interesting challenge, as it had a 48hr deadline. Its was refreshing to be under the pump, and have that pressure to do a model in that time frame. Here is my entry for that, and old Dragon Slayer by Citadel.

For the blood, I use the Tamiya Clear Red. Works a treat, and I simply add a bit of black to darken the bood. Really great stuff. 

Some close ups of the Dragon eye. Very happy with how that turned out. Wanted to do something a bit more special than the usual. 

These are the only pieces I have done so far, but I am quite proud of them. I'm looking forward to the next competition, and maybe one day I might win one!
