Warhammer terrain

Finally put the finishing touches on this piece of terrain. Great model. I do hope that they bring it back.

Great details on it. Hope to use it in many games going forward.

Thanks for looking!

My battlefield rocks...

I have tried to be a little more productive and proactive on the blog. There is a few goals I have set myself over this school holiday, one of which was to finish some terrain I have been working on.

I drew my inspiration from my hobby origins in the old 2nd Edition of 40k. So perhaps if you are of that particular vintage, some of these might look familiar to you.

I also got a lot of ideas from this old, citadel book on How to Make Wargames Terrain. It has a lot of the old terrain and ideas from way back when.

So without further ado...
I made these out of a surplus of polystyrene that came in packing boxes for furniture, which I couldn't get rid off fast enough. So i decided to make some of the old rock pillars. I carved them with a sharp Stanley knife, stuck them on round drink coasters, and glued them together with PVA. When dry, I then went over them it plaster to seal it a bit, then went at them with some cheap bulk paints. Finally, a bit of green flock, and all done.

Next, I finished my old project which I actually started nearly 20 years ago with my dad. I remember one day after a local 2nd edition tournament, he said we should make some terrain for my games with friends. So I picked what I think, is the most iconic 2nd edition terrain I can think of, the old fortress. So we made plans, had a rough idea of scale, comparing it models from pictures and then made the core structure out of wood. And that is where it stayed for many years. Finally though, I got some impetus to finally get this old model finished, and here it is in all its glory.

The rocks I made out of Woodland Scenic molds and plaster, which I think work well.

The decking is from plasticard and the back of the fortress is made from the new Necromunda doors and some old Baneblade armour I had in my bits box.

Finally with some old 2nd edition models for scale.

I am quite happy with it and have been using these new terrain pieces with games with my boys. Feels good to get the fortress in particular, finally done.

Anyways, thanks for looking.

Stay safe.

Update at long last

Well, despite the low activity on this blog, I have been rather busy hobby wise. Due to circumstances out of my control, the internet has been out of action for quite a while, so while it has hampered any updates, though not dampened the hobby.

I have been playing a lot of Kill Team, and have finished a bit of stuff for it.

First up I have finished the Kill Zone, Sector Munitorium.

I took the slack method. Coloured spray can, dry brush brown and metal, wash with Agrax and Nuln. Done.
I also did the crane and vehicles in the slack method. Spray the yellow, and metal separate. Assemble, do some details and wash in sepia. Done.
With the barrels, it was the same as the above, though I used a gold sharpie as I had heard people using them, and I wanted to try it. Did a decent job, and was quick.
Finally the crates, which was the exact same as the crates, with the gold sharpie of course.

In addition, I also finished the basic models of my Deathwatch Killteam.

And lastly, I finally finished my version of Archamus for 30k/40k. This model has been on my desk for a long time, so it was good to clear it!

I used an old fleet captain, with a Games Day Thunder Hammer, and of course a new sternguard head. The fur is just green stuff over one of my ancient power packs from long ago. The bionics, I not not sure where I got it from.

So, very busy!

Next up is either finishing painting another model on my desk, or maybe try a scheme for my Tallarn Killteam.

Thanks for looking, cheers!

The Battle for Maugthrond Pass, the beginning..Part 2

Well, made some progress on the terrain for the upcoming game. Behold my Elven village, all from the old Warhammer campaign box, Tears of Isha.

I now have the manor, watchtower and the waystone. The card is reinforced in the inside with balsa wood, and I can't recommend that enough. The bases are just blank drink coasters and placemats from Bunnings. They really do the trick!

Next up is getting Eltharion ready. I've pinned and primed him and Stormwing, so hope I can get it all done before the game in a few days.

Thanks for looking!

The Battle for Maugthrond Pass, the beginning..Part 1

So this all started out innocently enough. I decided to catch up with a friend of mine that I see only rarely (due to life), and he had the idea to play a game of Warhammer with Eltharion and Grom the Paunch. I remembered I had bought an unpunched copy of the old 4th Edition box set a few years ago, and in it was this scenario, The Battle for Maugthrong Pass.

This scenario basically pitted the elves of a town, that was a little of the beaten track on the way to Tor Yvresse, and Eltharion himself is flying ahead of his armada, trying to locate the one that killed his father, against Grom and his goblin hoard. Grom, being a cunning goblin, decides to take a less direct way to the old elf city, and hence this scenario.

This scenario originally used all the models from the old 4th Edition box set. We, however, are going to do it with a slight spin on it. We have agreed to use the core forces from the box set, but make the rest of the army from the old 4th/5th edition army books. Not only that, but use 5th edition magic as well! The core rules, however will still be 8th edition.

So with the scene set, I have 3 days to get things ready. Firstly I needed an elf town, or little settlement at least. I already have a waystone from the old campaign box, Tears of Isha. That box also has a watch tower and an elf manor house. So last night I made the watchtower.

The scenario also needs lots of woods, but I have plenty of those. So i figured, at the bare minimum, i needed to the following:

Build the manor house
Build/pin Eltharion on Stormwing and paint him
Find my old copy of Warhammer Magic, for items and magic
Make a 2000 point list using the core models from the scenario, plus adding more.

If I get any additional time, I will try and freshen up a few of my models, though fully painted is not going to happen at this stage.

So lots to do, hopefully I get finish Eltharion and the manor house today.

Thanks for looking, Cheers!

Barrels of fun...

Finished up my first lot of 9 barrels. Decided to go for a yellow look, as I had a yellow spray, plus looked a bit different.

I did these by spraying them with the GW yellow spray. Gave them a quick coat of Yriel Yellow, and a couple of coats of white for the middle. For the gold, I decided to try something I have heard of people doing, and that is using a gold metalic sharpie. Thought I'd give it a go to see how it coated the molded parts, and if it washed well. Turns out not too bad, and it was very quick and easy to use. I will probably use it on some other terrain pieces. I then did some quick and dirty brushes of Leadbelcher and finally, I used the old Gryphionne Sepia just to wash it down. Overall, not too bad.

Here's hoping the next 9 will be just as easy to do.

Thanks for looking, Cheers!

Finally some activity, just a bit of terrain.

It has been ages since I posted anything.

It has been on my mind, but work and life has been very busy. That said, I have had time for hobby. Namely, looking at other blogs, and my friends and I have been playing a lot of games of Kill Team. We now have a few Kill Zones to play with, and I finally got sick of looking at unpainted stuff, so I made a start on some of it.

So I managed to finally paint up some of my Necromunda cover. I have another box worth, but this will do for now. Just a simple process, spray metal, rust it and wash it with good old Agrax, and done. Quick and easy, but better than grey.

I am hoping to be more productive, and post a little more. However I am aware I have said similar things before so, just baby steps at the moment.

Next hopefully some more terrain or some models, will see how motivated I am.

Cheers!

Deathwing 3 and some terrain

Well, I have been busy painting away. I have finished of the Librarian in Terminator armour for the Deathwing. The model is from the Space Hulk set, with most of the Blood Angel motifs shaved off. I also cut down the shoulder pad and added a Dark Angels one from my bits box.

I also made a start on the next squad. Hope to get them primed before the next game!

I have also been playing a few games of Middle -Earth strategy Battle Game with my sons. It has been good fun, so I got round to getting a bit of terrain done for the grass mat.

I got these from a railway hobby shop that I found just 2 minutes from my new house. They have a lot of very cool stuff there, and a plethora of paints and such. So I can forsee I will spend a lot of time there in the future.

These trees and underbrush are from that shop, from the railway section. They look very nice, though I understand I need to spray it with a mixture of PVA, water and something else? I need more research in order to know what to spray it with to get it to set. Still, very happy with them.

I do have a game coming up, in theory, so I will try and get some terrain ready for it and if I can paint a couple of terminators.

Back to it!

Thanks for looking!

Tears of Isha waystone

Tears of Isha is an old 5th edition campaign box. I scored a copy a while a go, as I was curious about the story and plus had a few of the other campaign boxes they did from that era.

Since I am on a High Elf bend at the moment, it seemed like a good time to assemble one fo the buildings from that old box. I thought I'd go easy and do the waystone.

I reinforced the sections inside with balsa wood, and scored some placemats and coasters from Bunnings, as they made cheap and ideal bases for these card buildings.

I think it does the job.

It is quite tall, but looks suitably impressive.

I have also noticed that using the card buildings from Tears of Isha, I can also recreate the buildings in the old 4th edition scenario, except they will be more elf like than the card in that old box set.

Perhaps its an idea I might grace one day.

Anyways, that's all for now. Work is back to it, though I think I might paint either a character or a silver helm or two. We shall see.

Anyways, thanks for looking.

Painting up some much needed terrain

I kinda got a bit sick and tired of playing on a painted board with my painted armies, but with unpainted terrain. So I decided to make a start in fixing that.

Ages ago, I bought an Imperial City, that big set that came out for Cities of Death. I made up three buildings, and that's it. I decided to make up more buildings with the vast amount of sprues I have lying around. I also painted up the building that's be sitting there for years.

Here are my efforts. For all these buildings I use craft paint, and sparingly use some washes on little areas to do some effects.

I decided early on to do the buildings in different colours, to make it look more interesting.

I actually ruined this piece initially with a too heavy dry brush of white. I then cracked out some of my Secret Weapon washes such as Baby Poo and Sewer Water, and filthed it up. It doesn't look too bad now. I also used the verdigris and rust on the metal and brass.

This looks a bit neater. My son helped paint it, and picked the colour, hence why its a bit salmon.

Should be good to use them in a game, along with my new mat. I figure with my remaining sprues I can make 2 more buildings, so all up I can have 7 buildings of various sizes which should be enough for most games.

Thanks for looking.

Cheers!

Battle of Krap'r Tower

This battle took place a few weeks ago, which uses those lovely GaleForce 9 water features I have already mentioned. This was a 1600 pts Battle line game that took place near Krap'r Tower. One day we wil do that particular scenario, though I am sure you can make a guess as to what it is.

Anyways, I took my Chaos Warriors, as I was in the mood for them recently, that and they are mostly painted. Here is the list I took.
'The Tormentor' Chaos Sorceror Lord (Lv 4, Flaming Breath, Talisman of Endurance, Enchanted Shield, Mark of Tzeentch, Soul Feeder, Sword of Might)

'Astaroth' Exalted Hero (BSB, Talisman of Protection, Mark of Tzeentch, Daemonic Steed, Third eye of Tzeentch, Shield)

20 Warriors of Chaos (Full Command, Mark of Tzeentch, Shields, Banner of Discipline)

5 Warhounds

5 Warhounds

8 Chaos Trolls (Additional Hand Weapons)

3 Skull Crushers (Ensorcelled Weapons)

I like Tzeentch so that's what I took for most of my units, apart from the Skull Crushers of course. I really wanted to try them out again, to see if inspiration would strike me to actually finish painting them, or perhaps they would die horribly.

Here is my friend Cail's Army, themed around Haarkon's Undead Reavers (awesome theme).
'Haarkon' Vampire Hero

Vampire Hero BSB

lv4 Necromancer

20 Skeletons

20 Zombies

20 Zombies

6 Dire Wolves

6 Dire Wolves

8 Crypt Ghouls

Terrorgiest

Not too sure about the equipment, but I'm sure there is some of the usual items for the heroes.

This shot looking very 'cool'. My general joined the Warriors, and the BSB took his usual home in with the trolls. The water features do look quite nice I think you'll agree.
I get turn 1. I declare some charges on the vanguarded Dire Wolves. Considering that its been awhile since I had a game, I charged the trolls into the wolves, intending to overrun past that undead unit (with Haarkon, and vampire BSB), on the right, further into his lines. In hindsight, a very stupid move, and my friend knows it, as he now has it on film.
The rest of the army looks on. I also foolishly decided not to move the Warriors, which meant I was out of range for my spells. Again, not thinking.
It may not seem I have moved, but my trolls wiped out the wolves, tried to over run, and ran 2".
His turn 1, he charges, and kills and runs down my trolls and BSB. I think I 'ran' 4" or something. Terrorgeist looms scary in the middle. Other units shuffle around, his lv4 necromancer with the zombies goes into the tower, and will spend the rest of the game, raising more and more into that tight cramped space.

My turn 2, the Skullcrushers make a long charge against the zombie unit in the forest, wipe them out and overrun into the side of the Crypt Ghouls. My trolls should have taken lessons. I send in the second unit of warhounds into the centre to help out the last lot. Seriously thinking of upgrading them to Maruader Horse...You'll also notice the absence of the Terrorgeist, who I managed to magic off with Gateway!

Face off between my main unit and the unit with Haarkon and the vampire BSB. I decide not to charge, in order to cast another lot of spells.
So in his turn he charges, Rolls okay, does 2 wounds in total, I roll like an idiot, bolstered by the 5+ regen save I gave him (thanks Tzeetch magic), and do hardly anything. I lose by 1 or 2, break and get run down. My Skullcrushers however systematically crush and decimate his unit of Crypt Ghouls.
That 1 model that I failed to kill in the centre with the warhounds, gets raised to full and put in the way of my remaining Skullcrushers.
I charge, kill the wolves, and overrun into the Haarkon unit. In a desperate gamble, I put all my attacks on Haarkon and manage to take him out! I loose the combat, but pass the check. Game over!

Very clearly a massive win for Cail! Well done!

Post Game Thoughts...
I can't really blame the dice (cept for the Warriors combat), as I really didn't play well, taking stupid chances and then they turned bad real quick. The only redeeming unit in my army was the Skullcrushers. Smashing through 20 Zombies, 8 Crypt Ghouls, 6 Dire Wolves, and Haarkon himself. Not a bad outing for the only unit not painted in my army! Unsurprisingly, they are on my painting table as I type this.

However it was great to get a game, especially with the new water features, and its always great to learn from a loss. Next time Haarkon! Next Time!

Thanks for looking!

Cheers!
