The Battle for Maugthrond Pass, the battle commences!

The scene is set. We embarked on this massive game of nostalgia, but with renewed vigor. I must admit, it took me a little bit of time to get my head around making an army list for 5th, plus a lot of the magic cards were most certainly a trip down nostalgia lane. At the time I played Skaven,  and my main opponent was Chaos, who would regularly thump me. So I had to be sneaky and use items like van Hostmans, and shards that lock them in time. Great times. Still, It was quite nice, plus I was looking forward to using the White Lions special rules, which I was very keen to do.

So without further ado, the first part of the battle!

The battle

The scene is set in the ancient village of Maugthrond. Thronduin is glad they made it back to his ancestral estates to ensure it wasn't despoiled by the loathsome goblins. He feels very confident that they will not come, especially as this place is quite far off the beaten track. Still, to play it safe, there are archers in each of the watch towers, plus a repeater bolt thrower in tower facing east. The elves, have there breakfast, confident the sharp eyes of the lookouts will warn them of any encroaching dangers.

The spearelves, White Lions and Thronduin's Guard of Swordmasters, break camp and have their delectable breakfast. We couldn't decide whether it was Lembas bread or Magic Jelly.
The goblin hoard deployed in the mist, to get close to the village.

With the mists rolling off the Annulii, being dispersed before the cruel goblin hoard of Grom, the goblins catch the elves of guard and have the first turn and move forward, making as little noise as they can. Despite the orders from Grom, one of the goblin units starts arguing over who has the pointiest spear for killing elves.

Elves Turn 1

The goblins take the elves completely off guard. The archers, leave the protection of the tower, with one of their number attempting to light the signal fire, which would warn Thronduin and the other watchtowers. Alas, the wood is too wet, and doesn't take the flame.

The repeater bolt thrower lines up a shot on the giant and does 3 wounds, while the archers do another 2 wounds.

Goblins Turn 2

The rest of the goblins move up. Blacktoof arrives on the field, and flies close to the waystone, ready to sap its energy. The injured giant charges the watch tower.

The giant smashes one of the elves, while his comrade, not used to such violence legs it.
Nothing happens in magic.
The elves are still happily and jovially having their magic jelly.
The end of the Goblin turn sees the goblins get closer, with the elves failing to warn their kin.

Elves Turn 2

With the warning not been given, the elf turn is very quick. Only the 5 archers can do anything.
The archers, line up their shots on the giant, hoping to remove its last wound. However, the tough hide of the monster holds.

Goblins Turn 3
The giant, charges into the archers, who despite getting a few hits, cannot penetrate its tough hide to take the beast down.
The trolls make a charge against the Swordmasters, clipping the last model. The combat sees the elves suffer too many losses, especially when enjoying their magic jelly. They break and are run down! Thronduin, using the escape card from the magic phase to jump into a portal and deploy elsewhere on the field.

Elves Turn 3

The elf spirits are very low! It was only a moment ago that Thronduin and his Swordmaster guard were enjoying their breakfast, the next they were beaten and eaten by trolls! No one knew the fate of Thronduin himself, so they cast aside their magic jelly and formed ranks to oppose the trolls.
The last remnant of the bolt thrower, rallies and steals himself to take out a giant but the hill.

And in he charges! He only has to do 1 wound, and he reclaims his glory!
The elves form ranks, ready to face the trolls.
Thronduin himself, casts some magic, to teleport to the rock lobber, and dispatches the crew in short order.

Alas, the brave elf meets his end, and gets picked up and thrown into the signal fire. At least now its lit.

Goblin Turn 4

The trolls, line up and charge into the elves, with the hoards of goblins not far behind, ready to burn the ancient home.
Grom, seeing his chance to get into combat, goes for a long charge into the spearelves. Needing at least an 11, he gets a 12 for a charge!
The elves, sandwiched between the trolls and Grom, prepare to sell their lives dearly.

Blacktoof, moves up to the waystone and steals its magic, thus scoring 10 victory points!

The charge takes a terrible toll in lives. With the elves failing their fear checks making little mark on the trolls or Grom.
Unsurprising they flee, with the brave White Lions being run down. The spearelves just make it away.
The battlefield at the end of the Goblin turn. The elves only have 1 unit left, and it is fleeing.

Elves Turn 4

The elves get reinforcements from the other watch towers, who appear at the north, west and south table edges. The spearelves, rally in the face of Grom and the deplorable trolls.
The elves coming from the south, charge into the goblins, ready to spill goblin blood! While the archers from the north and west, line up and attempt to slay the one wound giant, to no avail!
The elves from the south watchtower, slaughter the goblins, run them down, and panic off the goblin unit behind them.

This concludes part one of the Battle fot Maugthrong Pass. Stay tuned for part 2, coming soon!

Will the elves come back from the precipice of defeat? Will Eltharion be able to make enough of an impact to save the day?

The Battle for Maugthrond Pass, the armies...Part 4

In the lead up for the game, we decided to use the classic lists below, plus another 1000 points from the 5th Edition Army Books. We also decided to use 5th Edition Magic, though the core rules were still 8th.

This battle all centres around the elf town.

I had the core forces plus extra. If I don't light the signal fire in the 1st turn, everything activates and comes on a turn later, so it is a rather crucial roll. Eltharion himself doesn't come till Turn 5! So my meager forces will have to make do till he arrives.

The main victory points are for killing the main characters, with a little given for the units themselves. It is very clear, that as soon as the shaman steals the power from the waystone, that is 10 victory points right there. Since he is also on a flying monster, it does make it difficult to counter that.
But we shall see.

The next post will be the battle itself, which took place last night. I have over 70 photos to get through so it may take a little while.

The Battle for Maugthrond Pass, the story..Part 3

Well, its been a busy few days, but I have managed to finish off the big guy himself, Eltharion on Stormwing.

There is a lot of detail on this old model, but I must say, I enjoyed painting him up. Off course there was a lot of prep involved, as this is one of the old lead models, and needed a plethora of pins in it so it could handle the weight, especially on the wings. However, I am glad I have him finished for the big game.

I also have here the story so far.

Next up will be the army and the scenario itself.

The Battle for Maugthrond Pass, the beginning..Part 2

Well, made some progress on the terrain for the upcoming game. Behold my Elven village, all from the old Warhammer campaign box, Tears of Isha.

I now have the manor, watchtower and the waystone. The card is reinforced in the inside with balsa wood, and I can't recommend that enough. The bases are just blank drink coasters and placemats from Bunnings. They really do the trick!

Next up is getting Eltharion ready. I've pinned and primed him and Stormwing, so hope I can get it all done before the game in a few days.

The Battle for Maugthrond Pass, the beginning..Part 1

So this all started out innocently enough. I decided to catch up with a friend of mine that I see only rarely (due to life), and he had the idea to play a game of Warhammer with Eltharion and Grom the Paunch. I remembered I had bought an unpunched copy of the old 4th Edition box set a few years ago, and in it was this scenario, The Battle for Maugthrong Pass.

This scenario basically pitted the elves of a town, that was a little of the beaten track on the way to Tor Yvresse, and Eltharion himself is flying ahead of his armada, trying to locate the one that killed his father, against Grom and his goblin hoard. Grom, being a cunning goblin, decides to take a less direct way to the old elf city, and hence this scenario.

This scenario originally used all the models from the old 4th Edition box set. We, however, are going to do it with a slight spin on it. We have agreed to use the core forces from the box set, but make the rest of the army from the old 4th/5th edition army books. Not only that, but use 5th edition magic as well! The core rules, however will still be 8th edition.

So with the scene set, I have 3 days to get things ready. Firstly I needed an elf town, or little settlement at least. I already have a waystone from the old campaign box, Tears of Isha. That box also has a watch tower and an elf manor house. So last night I made the watchtower.

The scenario also needs lots of woods, but I have plenty of those. So i figured, at the bare minimum, i needed to the following:

Build the manor house
Build/pin Eltharion on Stormwing and paint him
Find my old copy of Warhammer Magic, for items and magic
Make a 2000 point list using the core models from the scenario, plus adding more.

If I get any additional time, I will try and freshen up a few of my models, though fully painted is not going to happen at this stage.

So lots to do, hopefully I get finish Eltharion and the manor house today.

Thanks for looking, Cheers!

Barrels of fun...

Finished up my first lot of 9 barrels. Decided to go for a yellow look, as I had a yellow spray, plus looked a bit different.

I did these by spraying them with the GW yellow spray. Gave them a quick coat of Yriel Yellow, and a couple of coats of white for the middle. For the gold, I decided to try something I have heard of people doing, and that is using a gold metalic sharpie. Thought I'd give it a go to see how it coated the molded parts, and if it washed well. Turns out not too bad, and it was very quick and easy to use. I will probably use it on some other terrain pieces. I then did some quick and dirty brushes of Leadbelcher and finally, I used the old Gryphionne Sepia just to wash it down. Overall, not too bad.

Here's hoping the next 9 will be just as easy to do.

Triumph and Treachery - Battle for the plaques of the Old Ones - Part 2

This is the second part of the Triumph and Treachery game. Part one can be found here.

This game was a long time ago (over a year), so I do apologise. I think this may very well be a photo dump, just for completeness as the details are very hazy.

From memory, everyone buffed and debuffed this massive combat to make sure no one won, as this would definitely tip the scales.

I remember the Vampire Lord getting into combat with the Sisters of Avelorn, however, I also remember him dying in a very humiliating way.
Backfield for the Lizardmen, looking safe.
Looks like the Vampire Lord did die in combat, with my mage and Handmaiden leaving.
Ultimately the Lizardmen ran down my Silver Helms, and into my tough Whiter Lions.

And with that the game comes to an end. As always, Triumph and Treachery games are a lot of fun, although it seems that the most experienced generals, myself and my friend Cail, are doomed to never win!

However, always good fun to crack out 8th edition again.

Thanks for looking!

Cheers!

Holy frag cannons and shotguns!

Well, since it is the school holidays, I made a start on my Deathwatch Kill Team. I got the Mordecai box, and I also used models from the box set that came out a few years ago, Deathwatch Overkill.

I'm planning on having a few models in the Kill Team, so I have some variety, especially as my friends and I are planning on a series of linked campaign games.

I went with my muted black option, as I wanted to have the option of adding battle damage. I haven't done that yet on these models, but may do so in future. This is the same method I used for my Sons of Horus black. Annoyingly enough, I didn't write it down, so I had to guess how I did it. Since I will not make the same mistake again, I will write it here for posterity.

Black undercoat.
Dark grey coat (think it was Mechanicus Grey)
3 washed of Nuln Oil
Battle damage to taste.

Hoping to have a game soon, so planning to make some more progress this week, with any luck.

Thanks for looking.

Cheers!

Finally some activity, just a bit of terrain.

It has been ages since I posted anything.

It has been on my mind, but work and life has been very busy. That said, I have had time for hobby. Namely, looking at other blogs, and my friends and I have been playing a lot of games of Kill Team. We now have a few Kill Zones to play with, and I finally got sick of looking at unpainted stuff, so I made a start on some of it.

So I managed to finally paint up some of my Necromunda cover. I have another box worth, but this will do for now. Just a simple process, spray metal, rust it and wash it with good old Agrax, and done. Quick and easy, but better than grey.

I am hoping to be more productive, and post a little more. However I am aware I have said similar things before so, just baby steps at the moment.

Next hopefully some more terrain or some models, will see how motivated I am.

Cheers!
